–Sensheant Magazine Interviews Lindsay Hagmen and Dr. SerenaGaia, Cont’d . . .
–Q # 7
Sensheant Magazine: I’m assuming ecosexuals are pretty sexually expressive to join such a movement, but that may not be true across the board. What kind of sexual healings and transformations are occurring among people in this community?
Dr. SerenaGaia: The idea of ecosexuality alone can bring back the hope, the imagination of happiness and joy to a person who feels dejected, isolated, or left out. Ecosexuality is a trope of cultural transformation that brings people together, that gels communities around itself, and that sustains networks of interconnected communities.
Practicing ecosexuality puts someone in the position to generate the abundant love we all need in our lives. Generating such abundance so as to spill out to others nearby and across the waves of planetary consciousness. In my case, ecosexuality empowered
me to recognize water as the one element (of the four including earth, air, and fire) I feel most affinity for. And with that, I recognized the tropical beach where I’ve lived for the past 18 year as my beloved and longtime spouse. I recognized this bond with my community in an ecosexual wedding where the beach acquired 15 “spice.” Ecosexual weddings are transformative events, expanding the idea of marriage to include nature, its elements, forces, and ecosystems. They perform a bond between the human “spice” and the element of nature or ecosystem to whom the human community is becoming wedded. They engage the idea of “family” in relation to these natural entities and ecosystems, thus making them more real, more emotionally significant, and more alive in the imagination of the communities that organize and perform the ecosexual weddings.
Ecosexual weddings are a new invention, ritual, and activism. But they are also
ancient. One example is the Sensa, a ceremony by which the super serene city of Venice celebrates it state of being wedded to the sea every year. This wealthy maritime republic of the Renaissance recognizes that its prosperity is a gift of the sea, whereupon its commerce traveled. Even today, people from Venice marry the sea every year. This example shows that human communities have long since been aware of our interdependence with nature and valued nature’s love for us.
Lindsay Hagamen: A fair number of people come to the ecosexual movement as relatively introverted individuals who have not had a grand sexual awakening but know they love the Earth. And it’s their love and passion for the Earth
that motivates them to embark on a journey of healing their sexual selves to better align themselves with the natural world. It’s really beautiful to see people from different backgrounds come together to share resources: those from the sex positive movement are sharing tools and techniques for embracing sexuality, and those who come more from the environmental side of the equation are sharing knowledge and understanding about living closely with the Earth. This synergy and diversity is really powerful. It creates a kind of hybrid vigor that breathes new life into collaborations. Very few of us are as fully embodied and integrated as the Earth. So with the Earth as our inspiration, ecosexuals are guiding each other through personal transformations and in the process are creating more vibrant and resilient local communities.
